The Academic Achievement Awards was established in 1995 and is an annual project of the Philippine Community Center. While the main aim of this project is to give community recognition to graduating high school students of Filipino descent for their academic milestone, it has also achieved several other goals.  It has served to invite the young Filipinos back to their Filipino community, by showing to them the community’s pride in their achievement and the hope that they, too, would in time give back to the community in whatever volunteer work they could.  And, it has also focused on their parents’ love and hard work in getting these young graduates to the success that they now enjoy.

Depending on the number of graduates and on the approved funds, a financial award ranging from $250 to $500 is given to each award recipient.  To date, more than a hundred thousand dollars have been given to the graduates since the establishment of this program.  Funding from the AAA comes from the Mrs. Philippines of North Texas Charity Fundraiser held biennially.

In 2014, PCCI evaluated an assessment of the effectivity of its achievement awards program.  The results showed that there were already several Filipino organizations that had modeled themselves after PCCI’s academic awards program and there were so many other private and public award opportunities for our high school Filipino graduates.  PCCI thus focused its attention on graduating high school student of Filipino descent who while maintaining good grades were also involved in volunteer service in Filipino organizations and endeavors.

In 2013, PCCI formally became a community partner of  ABS-CBN Foundation International.  Through this IRS-recognized foundation, PCCI has now been able to expand assistance to deserving underprivileged students and abused children through AFI’s Bantay-Bata (Child Watch) and Bantay Edukasyon (Scholarship) programs.  PCCI currently sponsors college students in the Philippines, with five of its scholars already graduated with four-year college degrees.   Two more to graduate in May 2019.  (The first graduates in their respective families).  To date, PCCI has sponsored eight college students to full college degrees.

Cognizant of how the children are one of the most vulnerable during calamities, PCCI International sponsored an Emergency Response Training for  typhoons, flooding, earthquakes and fires in 2018 in Bulacan, Philippines.  Over eighty elementary school kids participated.  Snacks and lunch were served and each kid received a response guide and manual-powered flashlights.

PCCI also participated in an entrepreneurial training session for its members and other persons interested in jump-starting their own businesses.  This training program was done in partnership with the Multi-Ethnic Educational and Development (MEED) Center.
